RECREATED UNDERGROUND TOUR

Acclaimed by many of our guests as the best mining tour available, the museum’s signature feature is the guided tour through a recreated historic drift of the Homestake Gold Mine.  Located just 17 steps* down in the lower level of our facility, the tour affords the public the best opportunity to being in the actual mine all while learning about its 125-year history.  Designed and constructed by those who knew the story best, this tour immerses our visitors into the mining world of the legendary Homestake, which was the deepest, longest lasting, and best producing gold mine in its day.  Our knowledgeable guides bring the miners’ story to life amidst displays of authentic Homestake mining equipment and artifacts giving our guests the only comprehensive look at both early and modern underground mining in the Black Hills.

Tours are approximately one hour long and generally offered at one-hour intervals with the final tour of the day starting no later than 4:00 pm**. Our mining tours are handicap accessible, and one of our friendly guides would be happy to accommodate you and your family as best as we can.

*A stair lift is available for those not able to descend or ascend steps.
**Reservations are generally not taken except for large groups; however, guests may call in advance to learn what the current tour times look like.
